12. Hotel Transylvania
2012, 2015, 2018
D: Genndy Tartakovsky
**********
A cute, passable cartoon I mostly watch for the werewolf characters
11. Wolf
1994
D: Mike Nichols
**********
A good movie, but feels more like a 90’s celebrity vehicle
than a real werewolf movie. Though I
don’t like the implication that eternal isolation from humanity is good.
10. Ginger Snaps
2000
D: John Fawcett
**********
Typical monster-as-metaphor-for-puberty movie. Oddly enough, it gets less gory
throughout its runtime.
9. The Wolfman
2010
D: Joe Johnston
**********
Fun, but I with it improved upon the “classic” werewolf design
of the original.
8. The Wolfman
1941
D: George Waggner
**********
A classic, but I’m not a fan of the “classic” design.
1984
D: Neil Jordan
**********
Symbolic movie with the best transformations I’ve seen.
6. The Monster Squad
1987
D: Fred Dekker
**********
A fun movie that boasts my favorite version of Dracula,
who drives a hearse, cusses at small girls, and throws dynamite at people. I also like its depiction of the classic
werewolf archetype, in which the human maintains sympathy by actually trying to
take preventative measures against killing people in werewolf form.
1981
D: John Landis
**********
A classic, but the one flaw (aside from werewolf design)
is that the protagonist is too careless in preventing his rampages.
4. Big Fish
2003
D: Tim Burton
**********
This is the most contentious item on the list, considering
how insignificant the werewolf’s role is.
Then again Danny DeVito as a werewolf is something to comment
about. It’s a great movie about a man
coming to terms with his father’s absence due to work commitments and the
latter’s unspoken love of him.
2004
D: Alfonso Cuaron
**********
This probably won’t please many horror purists, but this
is one of the best movies here. One
could give an honorable mention to subsequent movies in the series.
2. Dog Soldiers
2002
D: Neil Marshall
**********
Despite its low budget, it created some of the most terrifying
werewolf effects ever. The gore and camp
humor also make it a classic.
1. The Howling
1981
D: Joe Dante
**********
Possibly my favorite werewolf movie. Good allegory for human potential for
corruption, especially in subcultures.
