40's Movies Ranked

11. The Wolfman
1941
D: George Waggner
**********
The movie seems hokey and dated in a lot of ways, but it does tell an effectively tragic story.  However the way in which the protagonist meets the female lead is creepy and stalkerish.

10. The Bank Dick
1940
D: Edward F. Cline
**********
A solid comedy starring W.C. Fields.

9. It’s a Wonderful Life
1946
D: Frank Capra
**********
Although many find this movie twee, I think it’s a heartwarming tale.

8. Pinocchio
1940
D: Ben Sharpsteen, Hamilton Luske, Norman Ferguson, T. Hee, Wilfred Jackson, Jack Kinney, Bill Roberts
**********
A solid second effort from Disney.

7. Fantasia
1940
D: Various
**********
Great music set to great animation.  A wonderful idea.  I remember having the shit scared out of me by the “Night on Bald Mountain” sequence, but my favorite scene is….the dancing Chinese mushrooms.  Now can we have a heavy metal version of it?

6. Dumbo
1941
D: Ben Sharpsteen
**********
A great Disney movie with a memorably whimsical premise

5. Casablanca
1941
D: Michael Curtiz
**********
A great movie, but this shameless video pretty much compels me to boycott it.

4. The Reluctant Dragon
1941
D: Hamilton Luske
**********
A funny movie about a nice, fat dragon.

3. Citizen Kane
1941
D: Orson Welles
**********
It’s revolutionary and rightly seen by most as one of the greatest movies ever made.  Because of this, some more lowbrow people want to claim it’s overrated.  In other words, it’s like the Beretta of movies.

2. Bambi
1942
D: David Hand
**********
The original cute-cartoon-animal-loses-his-innocence movie.

1. The Third Man
1949
D: Carol Reed
**********
Although most people cite Citizen Kane as the best Orson Welles movie ever made, I prefer this one.  Great cinematography, some good humor and a classic villain.
