Johnston began work as a concept artist and effects technician for classics like Star Wars and Indiana Jones and went on to become a competent, sometimes fun, director with a knack for visuals.
2001
**********
An unnecessary sequel that breaks absolutely no ground.
6. Jumanji
1995
**********
Although it has likable protagonists, the potential of
its clever premise is exhausted relatively fast. Afterwards, the movie was almost pure false
suspense. Perhaps if this wasn’t a
family movie, we might wonder which character would die with every natural
disaster. And of all the movies to come
out with the “Gun Store Owner Who Doesn’t Give a F***” cliché. While being made in the mid-90’s may have
been an excuse for its bad CGI, it wasn’t an excuse for the bad practical
effects. I watched a couple episodes of
the animated series and found it to be far better. I have high hopes for the upcoming movie with
The Rock in it; I don’t think I’ll have any nostalgia-driven objection to it.
5. The Pagemaster
1994
Animation D: Maurice Hunt
Another mediocre 90’s family film, even if it does have
good animation.
4. The Wolfman
**********
A solid, fun movie with great visual style. I don’t quite how they stuck with
the “classic” wolfman design. Iconic as
it is, it’s still pretty lame.
3. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
1989
**********
A classic movie with great special effects and a lovable
Rick Moranis. It’s funny how a movie can
make me feel sad for a non-anthropomorphic ant.
I also love the animated intro.
2. Captain America: The First Avenger
2011
**********
One of the better Marvel movies. It has a good visual style, and it does a
great job taking a patriotic character and making him more relatable and smart
while staying true to the spirit of the source material.
1. The Rocketeer
1991
**********
A fun, thoroughly enjoyable movie. My second-favorite movie about ideological
celebrities' getting put in their place.
